London-based Mind Candy has created one of Britain's hottest virtual worlds for children, and its next phase of growth has taken the company into new territory, including plush toys and music concerts.

Mind Candy's diverse business interests turned the fast-growing start-up into a siloed, medium-size company. It needed a solution to that would streamline workflows and provide better visibility across teams.

"Before Atlassian, we felt an ongoing tension at Mind Candy," says Mark Baker, tech tools lead at Mind Candy. "There are the developers who follow an agile style of development and ship things whenever they want to. And then theres the commercial side that deals with offline products, and they might be dealing with deadlines 18 months in advance."

In the fall of 2012, Baker turned to Atlassian Expert Valiantys for a more streamlined IT solution to manage the company's numerous workflows. At the time, Mind Candy was using off-the-shelf tools from several different providers. Baker's key requirement was speed, so Valiantys customized a solution that includes Jira, Confluence, and Zephyr for Jira, an add-on for test case management.

Valiantys migrated all of Mind Candy's data from legacy tools, created custom screens and fields, and trained Mind Candy employees on how to make the most of the Atlassian products.

According to Baker, one of the most effective benefits has been the additional context, which has led to higher-quality code. For instance, someone in the marketing department might mention a bug in Confluence, and because the bug was already logged into Jira, a developer can see how the bug affects other departments. Now, instead of bugs being in a little ghetto that nobody looked at, they're all nicely integrated into everyone's workflow and developers can see how these issues affect other teams.

Before Atlassian, we felt an ongoing tension at Mind Candy... We'd tried lots of different project management software and issue trackers, but we never had them all in the same product.— Mark Baker, tech tools lead, Mind Candy
