* If you have a 500 user license issued between 22-Feb-2012 and 10-Jul-2014, please see the above FAQ: 3. I have a legacy Enterprise 1-500 or non-Enterprise 101-500 user license, how much is it to upgrade

Note: If you are using JIRA Agile, JIRA Capture or any other add-on, the add-on licenses must match the user count and type of the parent product. For instance, a 500 User Commercial JIRA Server license will require a 500 User Commercial JIRA Agile and/or JIRA Capture Server license.

Starter licenses (10 Users) are not upgradeable. If you are using a Starter license and wish to move to a higher user tier, you can purchase a new license for the number of users who will be using JIRA.

If you are currently using another legacy license; not shown in the table above; please Contact Us our for assistance.

5. I'm a legacy JIRA 100+ (Unlimited) User license holder, what are my next steps?

The JIRA 100+ (Unlimited) User server license was retired on 22-Feb-2012. Existing customers with this legacy server license were eligible for grandfathering for up to two (2) additional years. After the JIRA grandfathering period ends, legacy server license holders have the option to renew their "Unlimited" server license at one of the available JIRA user tiers.

JIRA 100+ (Unlimited) Grandfathering

All JIRA 100+ (Unlimited) server licenses expiring on or before 22-Feb-2014 are eligible for one last one-year renewal at the legacy JIRA 100+ (Unlimited) renewal pricing.

Any JIRA 100+ (Unlimited) license that expires after 22-Feb-2014 no longer qualifies for the grandfathered pricing. Since 22-Feb-2012 Atlassian has contacted JIRA 100+ (Unlimited) license holders about the ending of the grandfathering including last years renewal documents.

Renewal quotes for legacy server licenses will automatically be generated for the 10,000+ User server license, unless you indicated a need for less users though our surveys in 2013.

A note about add-ons

Please remember all JIRA add-ons must match the JIRA user-tier in order to continue to function. If you are requesting a renewal quote or generating one via our website, please be sure to include all of the add-ons at the same user-tier as the parent product (JIRA).

  • If you received an auto-quote from Atlassian, please review the quote for accuracy to ensure
          a) the quote includes all of your JIRA add-ons
          b) the tiers match up
  • In the scenario where a consolidated renewal of all your server licenses and add-ons is not feasible, you may request a free server license conversion to a compatible user-tier by contacting our Sales Team.
  • If you have an legacy Unlimited user add-on, please see our announcement regarding legacy Unlimited addons at our Market annoucement FAQ.

If you have any questions, please contact our Sales Team.

6. How to request a quote?

Requesting an obligation-free quote is easy! You will just need to submit your request through our Atlassian Store. In the final step check "Get a Quote" and click submit. Only quotes submitted though our online form are considered valid, screen prints of the shopping cart is not the same as a quote.

7. Do my JIRA and JIRA Agile and/or JIRA Capture licenses have to match?

Yes, JIRA Agile and JIRA Capture are global plugins for JIRA. If you are using JIRA Agile and/or JIRA Capture, the JIRA, JIRA Agile and JIRA Capture licenses must match the user count and type. For instance, a 25 User Commercial JIRA Server license will require a 25 User Commercial JIRA Agile license and a 25 User Commercial JIRA Capture license.

8. What to do if JIRA has exceeded the Licensed User Count?

An active user in JIRA is by definition any user account in the system with the "JIRA Users" global permission, i.e. anyone who can log in. Unlimited 'anonymous users' are permitted on all licenses.

If you have exceeded your license count, you will need to remove users or groups from the "JIRA Users" global permission. See Unable to Create Issues due to Exceeded License.

9. How is JIRA Server licensed?

A JIRA Server commercial/academic/starter license entitles you to:

  • Deploy a single instance of JIRA in a production environment on 1 server
  • Unlimited projects and issues
  • Perpetual JIRA use
  • Software maintenance for 12 months - including all updates and online support (from Sydney, Australia and San Francisco, USA during local business hours)
  • Full source code (under a developer source license which allows for broad customization)

Licensing fees are quoted per number of 'active users'. An active user in JIRA is by definition any user account in the system with the "JIRA Users" global permission or the "JIRA Administrators" permission, i.e. anyone who can log in. Unlimited 'anonymous users' are permitted on all licenses.

An academic license is available for qualified educational and academic institutions (learn more).

Please read the Atlassian Customer Agreement for more details.

10. What does JIRA mean?

Like all good names in the software industry, it started as an in-house code name.

We originally used Bugzilla for bug tracking and the developers in the office started calling it by the Japanese name for Godzilla, Gojira (the original black-and-white Japanese Godzilla films are also office favorites). As we developed our own bug tracker, and then it became an issue tracker, the name stuck, but the Go got dropped - hence JIRA!

Further investigation into the name has revealed that Gorira is Japanese for "gorilla", whilst Kujira is Japanese for "whale". So Gojira is roughly translated to mean "gorilla the size of a whale"! (Thanks to yusuke_arclamp — Oct 2002)

For those who care - it sounds best if you yell it loudly, as though charging into battle. C'mon - try it!

11. How is JIRA pronounced?

We pronounce it 'JEEra', based on the pronunciation of 'Kujira.'
