Kiva connects over 1.5 million lenders with entrepreneurs in remote areas around the world, shaping the future for families and entire communities to help alleviate poverty. Kiva has raised over $900 million for borrowers through its microlending platform, Kiva.org.

Challenge
Kiva has 100+ employees and 400+ volunteers working across more than 80 countries to provide loans to subsistence farmers, small-scale merchants, and others to help fight poverty. Using tools that lacked a central hub and required email for communication, the global staff were struggling to work together.

Solution
Kiva standardized on Atlassian, implementing Jira for project tracking, Confluence for knowledge management and collaboration, and Hipchat for communication. Adoption was easy, with teams up and running within a week. “Every team at Kiva is now touching an Atlassian product, from our engineers, to our global partner operations, to even our volunteers out in the field,” says Kiva COO Sonali Kothari.

Kiva partners with microfinance institutions, NGOs, and social-minded businesses to find ideal loan recipients. They use Confluence to document partner policies, keep track of risk and portfolio operations, screen borrowers, collect repayments, and administer loans. “We use Confluence to document everything we do at Kiva,” says Nick Anderson, senior product manager at Kiva. “Anytime we spin up a new project, it starts in Confluence, where everybody can collaborate and comment on it.”

Kiva’s support team integrates Jira with Hipchat to resolve issues faster. “We drop a link from Jira into a Hipchat room so everyone can see the high‑level elements of that issue and collaborate to resolve it,” says Anderson.

Engineers, product managers, and designers also use Atlassian to build new functionality into Kiva.org and into their internal systems. “Atlassian allows us to take on bigger projects and get more momentum around those projects, because it's easy for many teams to work together on individual pieces while keeping track of the project as a whole,” explains Kevin O'Brien, CTO at Kiva. “We all rely on Atlassian.”

Benefits
By standardizing on Atlassian, distributed teams are working more efficiently and scaling toward Kiva’s mission: connecting people through lending to alleviate poverty. “Atlassian helps us reach our goals by enabling us to build software faster, collaborate with our partners around the world, and achieve our vision of a connected human experience,” says Kothari.
