Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity.
The Engineering Manager (EM) is accountable for outcomes, people, and technical health for the Comments domain—driving execution through empowered feature leads, ensuring long-term platform quality, and cultivating an inclusive, high-performance team culture.
1) People Leadership & Team Health
Lead a team of software engineers (typically 8–12), setting clear expectations, coaching, and providing actionable feedback.
Career growth and performance: run growth plans, calibrations, reviews, and compensation planning with clarity and fairness.
Hiring and onboarding: partner with recruiting; raise the bar via structured interviews; accelerate ramp-up with clear onboarding plans.
Culture and inclusion: foster psychological safety, inclusive practices, and healthy team rituals (retros, demos, knowledge-sharing).
2) Delivery, Planning, and Execution
Own delivery outcomes: define scope and milestones with the triad; track progress, risks, and dependencies across frontend, backend, and platform workstreams.
Empower Feature Leads (FLs): enable FLs to drive cycle execution; unblock ambiguity; arbitrate decisions when consensus stalls.
Cross-team orchestration: coordinate with Editor, Notifications, Trust/Abuse, Data Platform (e.g., StreamHub/Kamino pipelines) to land integrated outcomes (e.g., deleted-comment events for data retention).
Incident and operational leadership: drive “detect early, restore fast” practices; ensure PIR quality and action follow-through; improve on-call ergonomics.
3) Technical Stewardship & Platform Quality
Technical vision: set a 6 month technical north star for comments (extensibility, performance, accessibility, moderation readiness, data lifecycle).
Quality bar: champion automated testing, canary/gradual rollouts, observability (SLIs/SLOs), and error-budget-driven prioritization.
Tech debt governance: maintain a visible improvements backlog; schedule debt paydown alongside roadmap; enforce “leave it better” principles.
4) Metrics, Reliability, and Operational Excellence
Define metrics that matter: comment create/edit P50/P90 latency, client error rate, availability, notification delivery, spam/abuse false-positive/negative rates, and UX quality heuristics.
Runbook maturity: ensure robust playbooks, alert hygiene, and clear ownership; “you build it, you run it.”
Continuous improvement loops: weekly ops reviews, SLO breach follow-ups, PIR action tracking, and cost/performance reviews.
5) Product Collaboration and Customer Impact
Triad partnership: co-shape the roadmap with PM and Design; validate feasibility, instrument experiments, and iterate quickly on insights.
Experience quality: drive papercut backlog (e.g., edit reliability, draft safety, mention accuracy); reduce friction and elevate polish across devices and locales.
Compensation

Base pay within the range is ultimately determined by a candidate's skills, expertise, or experience. In the United States, we have three geographic pay zones. For this role, our current base pay ranges for new hires in each zone are:
