What is a DevOps template?

The DevOps template is pre-formatted to better integrate the processes between software development and IT teams. DevOps is a set of practices that emphasizes team empowerment, cross-team communication and collaboration, and technology automation. With DevOps, teams work collaboratively throughout the product lifecycle in order to increase the speed and quality of software deployment.

Boards

DevOps teams use boards to visualize, track, and manage work throughout the development lifecycle.

How to get started with the DevOps template

This template uses Jira Software to help software development and IT teams maintain alignment, velocity, and quality.

1. Sign up for Open DevOps

When you sign up for Open DevOps, we’ll automatically provision and connect free versions of Jira Software, Bitbucket, Confluence, and Opsgenie. If you use third party tools like GitHub or Jenkins - you can swap these tools in with a click.

2. See your connected data

Once you land in your DevOps project, you’ll have visibility into work that happens in your connected tools directly from Jira Software. Specifically, you’ll have access to your repositories through the Code tab, pipelines through the Deployments tab, documents through the Pages tab, and on-call schedule through the On-call tab.

3. Contextualize dev and release info

Use the kanban board to create issues that help you prioritize and track your work. Inside the issue, utilize the dev and release panel to see all the development information related to that specific unit of work, including branches, commits, pull requests, and more.

4. Create DevOps automation rules

Create automation rules to keep the work you track in Jira in sync with your IDE or Git tool, using commits and other PR activities as triggers. For example, you can automate a pull request approval to update an issue’s status in Jira and send a quick message to your team’s channel in Slack.
