Note: If you are using GreenHopper and Bonfire, the JIRA, GreenHopper and Bonfire licenses must match the user count and type. For instance, a 25 User Commercial JIRA license will require a 25 User Commercial GreenHopper and/or Bonfire license.
Starter licenses (10 Users) are not upgradeable. If you are using a Starter license and wish to move to a higher user tier, you can purchase a new license for the number of users who will be using JIRA.
Upgrade pricing for JIRA 100+ (aka JIRA Unlimited) can be found in the JIRA Enterprise FAQ.
If you are currently using another legacy license – not shown in the table above – please contact our Sales Team for assistance.
4. How to request a quote?
Requesting an obligation-free quote is easy! You will just need to submit your request through our Quote & Order Form. In the final step check "Get a Quote" and click submit. Only quotes submitted though our online form are considered valid, screen prints of the shopping cart is not the same as a quote.
5. Does my JIRA and GreenHopper and/or Bonfire licenes have to match?
Yes, GreenHopper and Bonfire are global plugins for JIRA. If you are using GreenHopper and/or Bonfire, the JIRA, GreenHopper and Bonfire licenses must match the user count and type. For instance, a 25 User Commercial JIRA license will require a 25 User Commercial GreenHopper license and a 25 User Commercial Bonfire license.
6. What to do if JIRA has exceeded the Licensed User Count?
An active user in JIRA is by definition any user account in the system with the "JIRA Users" global permission, i.e. anyone who can log in. Unlimited 'anonymous users' are permitted on all licenses.
If you have exceeded your license count, you will need to remove users or groups from the "JIRA Users" global permission. See Unable to Create Issues due to Exceeded License.
7. How is JIRA licensed?
A JIRA commercial/academic license entitles you to:
- Deploy a single instance of JIRA in a production environment on 1 server
- Unlimited projects and issues
- Perpetual JIRA use
- Software maintenance for 12 months - including all updates and online support (from Sydney, Australia and San Francisco, USA during local business hours)
- Full source code (under a developer source license which allows for broad customization)
Licensing fees are quoted per number of 'active users'. An active user in JIRA is by definition any user account in the system with the "JIRA Users" global permission, i.e. anyone who can log in. Unlimited 'anonymous users' are permitted on all licenses.
An academic license is available for qualified educational and academic institutions (learn more).
Please read the End User License Agreement (EULA) for more details.
8. What does JIRA mean?
Like all good names in the software industry, it started as an in-house code name.
We originally used Bugzilla for bug tracking and the developers in the office started calling it by the Japanese name for Godzilla, Gojira (the original black-and-white Japanese Godzilla films are also office favorites). As we developed our own bug tracker, and then it became an issue tracker, the name stuck, but the Go got dropped - hence JIRA!
Further investigation into the name has revealed that Gorira is Japanese for "gorilla", whilst Kujira is Japanese for "whale". So Gojira is roughly translated to mean "gorilla the size of a whale"! (Thanks to yusuke_arclamp — Oct 2002)
For those who care - it sounds best if you yell it loudly, as though charging into battle. C'mon - try it!
9. How is JIRA pronounced?
We pronounce it 'JEEra', based on the pronunciation of 'Kujira.'
