Frequently asked questions

overview
Why has Atlassian decided to start making investments in the developer ecosystem? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Our ecosystem is a critical part of our success and includes developers building on top of our products and Marketplace Partners. This ecosystem is as important as ever as we focus more and more on our cloud-based solutions. We’re committed to doing our part to ensure a vibrant ecosystem, and now this includes putting our money where our mouth is with investments.

Developers at the start-up stage are an important audience for the venture program. We’ve been amazed at how our ecosystem has innovated on top of Atlassian’s products and we want to enable their success and growth.

What types of companies will Atlassian invest in? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Atlassian will invest in three types of companies that are critical to our ongoing success:

  • Early-stage (typically pre-seed and seed stage) startups building ecosystem apps for our cloud products. We invest in both existing ecosystem developers and new teams in this category, and are excited to give these companies an opportunity to grow.
  • Larger, more established product partners scaling their businesses. These investments will be made in partnership with institutional investors, and will generally target series A onwards.
APPLICATION PROCESS

The FAQs in this section about our self-service application process are generally meant for pre-seed and seed companies building ecosystem apps for Atlassian’s cloud products

Who can apply? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

The application on this website (above and below) is designed for our existing Marketplace Partners and developers, as well as new-to-Atlassian app developers who are looking for funding for their start-ups.

If you are a later stage company (Series A and beyond) looking for investment, please email us directly at ventures@atlassian.com.

I / my company has multiple apps and app ideas. How many application forms should I submit? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Please submit one application form per company. Descriptions of multiple apps can be included within one form.

What is the application process like? How long will it take to get a response? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

You can find the application form here.

We accept and review applications on rolling basis. You can expect to hear from us within four weeks of applying. If your application is taken forward, we will be in contact to organize an interview with the Atlassian Ventures team.

My company has other core activities as well as Atlassian Ventures app development, can Atlassian still invest in us? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Definitely. That said, in order to receive funding, you will need to have a business plan focused specifically on building a Marketplace app (or apps) for Atlassian’s cloud products. These are typically monetized through the Atlassian Marketplace or as a Trello Power-Up.

Do my app(s) need to be already released on the Atlassian Marketplace or as a Trello Power-Up, or can I submit an idea that is in development? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Either or both! You can submit applications for apps that are listed as well as apps that have not yet been developed. We’ll want to understand from your application how you plan to grow adoption of your app if it’s not already developed.

Does it matter whether my company is building an integration vs. an app that sits on top of Atlassian products? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Preference will be given to apps that are built specifically for the Atlassian Marketplace or as a Trello Power-Up. However, if your app leverages Atlassian at its core you should feel free to apply.

Will my application be assessed differently based on which country I am located in? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Not at all. Atlassian Ventures is a global program and we believe in unleashing the potential of teams all over the world. If your application is chosen, our legal team will work with you to structure the investment within the constraints of your country’s legal requirements.

I believe Atlassian has already invested in an app that competes with mine. Should I still submit an application? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

From time to time we may invest in competing ideas. We understand that there may be perceived conflicts, and we’ll work with you to address any concerns you might have.

My first application was not successful, can I apply again? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Yes! Just because an idea or app isn’t right for us right now doesn’t mean that will always be the case. We’d love to hear about the progress you’ve made. You are encouraged to submit a second application after you have new information that could help validate an investment.

INVESTMENT TERMS

The FAQs in this section about our investment terms are generally meant for pre-seed and seed companies building ecosystem apps for Atlassian’s cloud products; the FAQs immediately below do not generally apply for investments in later-stage companies (Series A and beyond)

What are Atlassian's investment terms? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

We have created standard investment documents, with target-friendly terms that we will not negotiate. This helps ensure that you can do what you do best – build great products – and we can make this process as scalable as possible (i.e., invest in lots of great companies!).

Our standard terms are a $250K USD convertible note with a $5M USD cap and a 20% discount.

Other rights that we will require as part of our investment:

  • Information rights – we request that companies send us send financial statements on a quarterly basis. This helps us track your progress over time.
  • Pro rata rights - these give us the right to participate in subsequent rounds of funding in order to maintain our ownership percentage.
  • In a nod to Atlassian’s Open Company, No BS value, we’ve published a blog about our Convertible Note, as well as the Note itself. See blog and Note for more information.

  • Right of notice - if you get an acquisition offer from a third party, we want to know about it! This does not give us any rights for negotiation, etc. It’s just a heads up about the process a few days in advance.
Do you have standard terms for the other types of investments? Copy link to heading Copied! Show +

Yes, we have standard terms for our investments in later-stage companies (Series A and beyond). In May 2022, we published this blog as well as our standard Side Letter.

These larger investments are typically made in partnership with a lead institutional investor and take into account the needs and growth plans of each company.

Of course, you also have ongoing and regular access to the Atlassian Ventures team, who can help with any roadblocks you’re facing.

When possible, we also provide showcase opportunities at virtual and face-to-face events such as Team, our annual customer conference.
