State of Developer Experience Report 2026
Developers say AI helps them ship work faster, but most still experience the same or more friction

Executive summary
The AI pilot is over, but the hard work of operationalizing it has just begun.
AI is delivering meaningful local benefits: 87% of developers say it helps them ship work faster, and 80% say it helps them deliver more without working longer hours.
Yet developers continue to report the same high levels of friction that has shaped software delivery for years. In fact, only 28% of developers say they experience noticeably less friction across their day-to-day workflow than before AI.
Drawing on a survey of 1,500+ software practitioners, Atlassian’s State of Developer Experience Report in 2026 explores what happens when individual AI adoption outpaces operational strategy, how developer experience continues to evolve with AI, and how in some ways, it continues to stay the same (hint: developers still lose hours each week to meetings and finding information).
Key takeaways
AI makes individual work faster, but also adds pressure to existing bottlenecks. 49% of developers say they spend 4+ hours per week reviewing AI output, correcting prompts, and more.
Very few organizations have a clear AI strategy. Only 17% of developers and 23% of leaders say their organization has a clearly communicated, actively implemented AI strategy across the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Engineering is becoming more about judgment than code. 75% of developers say they have more responsibility for validating the quality and safety of AI-generated output.
AI usage is—incorrectly—being treated as a productivity signal. 64% of leaders say greater AI usage is correlated with better outcomes. 41% of developers say they use AI more than necessary because they feel expected to.
