Calling All Android Devs – Help Us Help You

Since the release of Jira Mobile Connect we’ve had almost nothing but positive reaction from mobile developers. They love the ability to collect feedback from their end users – including custom data, screenshots, voice audio, and crash reports – and have it show up directly into their favorite bug tracker, Jira.

I say “almost” because there is one small gripe that comes up time and time again: Support for Android.

And trust me, we hear you loud and clear. We want this as much as you do.

Thankfully Jira Mobile Connect is open source, so with the strength of the Android community, we hope you can help us make this a reality even faster.

Jira Mobile Connect for Android

We understand the challenges of developing applications for an open platform like Android are significantly more complex than iOS – with seemingly endless combinations of devices, OS and app versions. So, it’s no surprise that Jira Mobile Connect will make a huge impact for Android developers everywhere.

To date, Dariusz has been leading the charge with his 20% time to get us a working alpha of Jira Mobile Connect for Android on Bitbucket. While this is heading in the right direction, we’d love to get more of you involved with the project.

How can I help?

Since Dariusz has the basics working, we’d love to get more folks involved by installing and testing out Jira Mobile Connect for Android (see steps below).

We have also setup a Jira project to track bugs and feature requests, so feel free to add your ideas for improvement and try to find something you feel is interesting and valuable to work on.

If you need inspiration, I asked Dariusz to identify the top three areas where we could use your help with Jira Mobile Connect for Android, which include:

  1. Provide ability to attach screenshot with feedback (ANDROID-2)
  2. Polling for server updates (ANDROID-6)
  3. Adding crash report (ANDROID-1)

Of course general testing, polishing and bug fixing is always welcome. We’d love to get more Android apps testing Jira Mobile Connect to help iron out some of the kinks (like this or that).

Getting started with JMC for Android

It’s actually pretty easy to get started with Jira Mobile Connect:

  1. First, you’ll want to fork the SDK for Android on Bitbucket and add it to your app. (See readme for details)
  2. Next, you’ll need to add the Jira Mobile Connect plugin to your Jira instance via your Plugin Manager and enable it for your project. (See documentation for details)
If you don’t already have Jira, just sign up for a free 30-day Jira OnDemand trial. JMC is included.
  3. Go wild!
Once your changes are complete, simply submit a pull request on Bitbucket for us to review your code and add it back to the Jira Mobile Connect SDK for Android. We’ll make sure to get some cool swag out to all contributors. So what are you waiting for??
