Designing Teams - How Building a Great Workspace is Like Building Great Software
Great software is built with a manifesto, an iterative process, and places customers at the highest priority. Why should the design and build of a workspace be any different?
At Atlassian, we've been focussing heavily on the design of our workspaces to create flexible, engaging, delightful, and yes productive places for our teams to work in. After all, you can't take creative people, stick them in a sterile, uninspiring environment, and expect them to achieve the best work of their lives.
It's about a lot more than foosball tables, beanbag chairs, and whiteboards. We think what we've learned can be applied anywhere from a freelancer's home office to entire office buildings. As our organisation has evolved from its engineering roots to incorporate a large design team, so have the needs of our workspace to help us work together as teams.
Hear Alastair Simpson and Robyn Dunn talk about how the Workplace Experience team at Atlassian partnered with their own internal customers to build workspaces in an agile way that is reflective of our modern workforce. DevTools at Netflix: Culture, Speed & Innovation
Every day Netflix streams 125 million hours of video to 80 million subscribers in 130 countries. Delivering new features daily at a global scale requires an engineering-oriented culture that moves fast and innovates faster.
The developer tools team at Netflix faces unique technical and cultural challenges deploying tools designed for a wide audience to teams with very specific needs.

Fast then Faster - a Retrospective on Retrospectives
So, you’re agile. You’ve got a healthy backlog, you understand your team’s velocity, and you’re holding retrospectives. You’re in a good place – right? Maybe not. You may have a handle on the quality of your stories & their output, but what about that of your team and those around you? Or your agile processes themselves?
Retrospectives are a great way to get feedback, but they are often both undervalued and underutilized as a tool for improvement. Agile gets you fast, but retrospectives get you faster.
We’ll walk you through what good and bad retrospectives look like, how to tell when they’re failing, and (more importantly) how to uncover what's lurking behind bias, ego, and protocol.

Give the Power Back: Unleashing Creativity, Drive, and Innovation
Inspired by a talk at Atlassian Summit 2015, No-IP decided it was time to empower every employee to create, drive, and innovate by overhauling their product development process. To do this, they scaled cross-functional teams and integrated Atlassian Playbook concepts like Project Posters, Demo Trusts, and Health Monitors, ultimately creating a culture where feedback is welcomed – and even desired – early in the development process.
This talk will dive into the cultural need for implementing processes like these, the challenges and triumphs of org adoption, and the measurable benefits of successfully rolling out these concepts. Attendees will leave armed with the steps necessary to achieve a development culture like No-IP's, where self-management, self-regulation, and ownership trumps a top-down approach.
Marketing: Your Unexpected DevOps Allies
Development teams and sale/marketing teams aren't always BFFs. Too often, there is a master-slave relationship: either marketing dictates what the product team builds based solely on what is "sellable" with little consideration to timelines or what non-customer-facing work needs to be done, or the product team does a bunch of random work with little consideration for creating a strong marketing "story". But it doesn't have to be this way.
In the DevOps spirit of cross-team collaboration, why not recruit sales and marketing as your newest allies in the fight against workplace silos?
This talk will cover practical, battle-tested ways to work together towards a higher-quality and more marketable piece of software. I'll share examples of how product teams at Atlassian do it – drawing both from personal experience, and the experience of my fellow marketers. From semi-obvious things like information radiators, to deeper collaborations in roadmapping and release planning, there's a lot more you can do than just invite the sales team to your stand-ups.
More Guidance, Less Process: the Atlassian Playbook
Complex problem require strong teams to address them. But many teams are globally distributed, diverse in their nature, and way harder to manage than individuals. Atlassian is one of those work environments. We wanted to harness the power of these diverse teams, and resist the temptation to add layers of bureaucracy, process, and compliance regimes to make every team member act the same.
We gave birth to the Atlassian Playbook. A set of principles, patterns (our view of healthy teams) and plays (what those teams do to be healthy), that enable us to retain autonomy, provide teams with freedom to operate in their environment, drive continual improvement, eliminate management by committee, and to ultimately provide our teams with the techniques to be efficient AND effective.

Top performing teams balance work with play. In this lightning talk, you'll get to know HipChat's most beloved bots, add-ons, and integrations. We'll show you how to command a gif from the internet, or build a meme yourself without leaving HipChat. You'll learn how the HipChat team uses bots to add simple functionality to chat that has also served to maintain a team culture in a period of 10X growth.
Practiced Curiosity: Building Collaboration Between Development and Design
Particularly within tech, design and development are notorious for collaboration gaps. While there are plenty of resources available that advocate for catalyzing collaboration between the teams, what we see far less are stories of that process in application. We'll cover how Atlassian’s HipChat team worked to adjust its culture to one fine-tuned for collaboration between design and development, and will provide actionable takeaways to adapt to your team's needs.
