Data-Informed Development, the Atlassian Way

Atlassian is more than a data-driven company; we’re data-informed. Our analytics form only a subset of the information needed to build a successful product. But it hasn’t always been this way. We've evolved our own processes and tooling over several years so we can now leverage all of our data to provide all Atlassian teams with the insights they need to build our amazing products.

We’ve shared what we've learned in the Atlassian Team Playbook, and with the power of Jira and Confluence, we’ve created a seamless integration of robust analytical insights into an agile workflow. Come and learn about our own journey, and how you can use our strategies to unlock the power of data in your organization and set a growth trajectory for your own products.

From 0 to 100 Micro-Features a Day in a Bank—Agile Transformation With Atlassian

7 years ago, implementing a simple feature in Alfa-Bank's customer-facing banking application would take a few months, followed by a few weeks of fixing bugs. To shorten our time to market and increase the quality of our products, we tried to adopt an Agile way of working. But it was impossible in a 20,000+ people organization without suitable collaboration tools. To solve this problem, Alfa-Bank implemented a comprehensive product development strategy, from product requirements to deployment, using the Atlassian suite. We now release about 100 micro-features every day and are continuing to grow.

In this talk, get a full overview of our product development process, learn about the challenges of navigating a highly regulated environment, and see how you can tackle large-scale process change using Atlassian's tools.

Why We’re Bad at Estimation, and What We Can Do About It

We've all been there. You're building a new feature and have planned meticulously - success criteria, milestones, and estimations. You've considered your dependencies, risks and who all of your stakeholders are. Yet somehow the project is never completed on time.

This problem is known as the planning fallacy and isn't unique to the software industry. Globally, organizations across every sector struggle to complete projects on time, often with catastrophic results.

This talk will use examples from a range of industries to understand why we struggle so much with estimation and planning, what frameworks are available for overcoming it, and how we can apply these practically when estimating software while remaining agile.

Effectively Managing Requirements Across Programs, Projects, and Teams

Enterprise-wide adoption of Agile frameworks poses new challenges, including: how do you effectively manage requirements across programs, projects, and teams? Requirements management, the backbone of an efficient software delivery lifecycle, can be less manual and better automated from the point of conception to being developed and deployed by Scrum teams.

In this talk, Tarun Sapra will share how Ingencio group uses the Atlassian suite to streamline the flow of requirements from top-level management to dozens of globally distributed Scrum teams. Discover how you can set up a large-scale Agile organization while maintaining transparency with reporting dashboards for each level of the organization. You'll also learn how the requirements pipeline can seamlessly map to an organization-wide “Spotify” Agile model of tribes, squads, chapters, and guilds.

Goodbye Projects – The Journey to Enterprise-Wide Product Value Streams

If you've ever worked on an enterprise "digital transformation" project, you've probably seen the usual pitfalls: delayed timelines, expanding budgets, and difficulty delivering continuous customer value. Shifting from a "project" to a "product" mentality is daunting, but has many benefits and can set your organization up for success if done correctly.

Nationwide Insurance has been experimenting with moving to a product approach, which requires applying value stream thinking in their organization. Join Carmen DeArdo, former DevOps leader at Nationwide, and Nicole Bryan, VP of Product at Tasktop, to learn about their experiences. Hear what has worked, what hasn't, and practical considerations for designing large-scale product value streams across the enterprise.

Triage Lessons Learned After 10 Years With Jira

Over the years, at every company I've worked with, engineers and managers have had to deal with information overload from our issue tracking systems. We've had numerous debates on whether a fix is safe, whether it is the right thing to do in the short and long term, and whether or not to include it in a release. Numerous times, managers have shot down engineers' concerns and vice versa. A few times, that overload has been the root cause of mission or project failure.

This talk covers lessons learned about using Jira for triage: how to find the most relevant comments, what constitutes "relevant", and how to stay on top of the important changes without missing a beat.
