Making the most of the Jira integration for Hipchat Data Center

Once in a blue moon, there comes a power couple so good for each other that you can’t help but merge their names into one. While “Jirpchat” may never take off, we can always take solace in the fact that there’s the Jira integration for Hipchat Data Center.

The integration gives you the ability to access Jira information the moment you need it, improve your daily workflow, separate signal from noise and stay in the loop from anywhere. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. For instance, did you know that while on Jira Service Desk, you can see the list of the rooms where a particular issue is being talked about?

Whether you use Jira Service Desk, Jira Software, or both, the Jira integration for Hipchat Data Center helps your team move faster and minimize distractions. Knowing some of the following tips will help you take efficiency to the next level.

From incident to incident management with the click of a button

When an incident occurs, your team needs a common space to huddle and share information in real-time. No one wants to navigate an incident through fragmented updates via one-on-one chat, or blindly scroll through conversation history to find the source of the incident.

The Jira integration for Hipchat Data Center lets you create a dedicated chat room directly from the Jira Service Desk issue and track the incident with a single click. From there you can invite others to join and configure exactly which corresponding issues get piped into that room.

Furthermore, you can pull up a list of the chat rooms where that issue is being talked about, making it easier to gather info during an incident or redirect team members to the right rooms.

Notifications only when you need them

We’ve all been there, working on a project and constantly checking chat for an issue transition or status update you’re waiting on. With the Jira integration for Hipchat, you only receive notifications about real-time actions for the Jira Service Desk or Jira Software project(s) you want to know about. What’s more, you can customize notifications for projects on your own, without the assistance of your global Jira administrator.

Speaking of managing what you see, the Jira Hipchat integration lets you surface issues from your saved Jira filters in the sidebar of your team’s Hipchat room. Only need to know about critical priority issues? Go into Jira and specify ‘critical priority issues,’ and your Hipchat sidebar will only populate critical priority issues. It’s as simple as that. And no: you won’t be chained to your laptop when you’re monitoring issues closely. You’ll see them on Hipchat’s mobile client, too.

Maximize your team’s “flow”

ChatOps is here. Connecting teammates through a transparent workflow and keeping information easily accessible is the name of the game.

Want to get up to speed on an issue quickly? Just type the Jira Service Desk or Jira Software issue key in any Hipchat room and you’ll receive a summary of the issue right there in chat. Similarly, you can preview any Jira issue or service desk requests that have been linked to in the conversation by clicking on the link in your chat history. You and your team can decide what needs to be done and keep the ball rolling.
