Building microservices without abandoning your monolith

Tuesday, March 31, 01:00 PM - Tuesday, March 31, 01:40 PM | Oceanside G

Q: What does a microservices architecture look like after a transition from a monolith?

A: 5 microservices connected to a giant legacy code base. (cue laugh track)

For teams making the transition from monolith to microservices, there’s a natural inclination for your engineers to clamor to work on new, shiny services. Yet your original monolith is likely driving 80 percent or more of your business logic and revenue. How can you maintain momentum and respect for your legacy code base, while still driving a transition to microservices?

In this talk, join CircleCI CTO Rob Zuber as he discuses how CircleCI has brought domain-driven design (DDD) to their systems and structure. While DDD is straightforward for greenfield projects, working backward to apply ubiquitous language to legacy systems is a tough job, and the words teams use to describe their original monoliths can make it even tougher.

Continuous delivery as Agile’s successor: What it means for the rest of the business

Tuesday, March 31, 03:35 PM - Tuesday, March 31, 04:15 PM | Oceanside E

But you don’t get the benefits of continuous delivery simply by automating deployments. As with agile, the culture needs to move, whole teams need to be engaged, and people need to take more ownership of the delivery process – even those in non-technical roles.

Let's step back to explore the conceptual underpinnings of CI/CD, and then see how to bring it to life with Atlassian tools. We'll examine key practices like:

How to Un-F*** Jira

Tuesday, March 31, 01:55 PM - Tuesday, March 31, 02:35 PM | Oceanside C

Agile is about delivering value and getting feedback quickly. Sounds simple, right? So why are tools like Jira still being set up in ways that sabotage that simplicity? When issues are configured with 30 required fields, workflows with 20 statuses, and permission schemes so draconian even the NSA would raise an eyebrow, you know something has gone sideways.

There’s no need for teams to suffer poorly-configured tools (as well-intended as that configuration might be). Drawing on real-world experience implementing agile and DevOps, Jon Kern, co-author of the Agile Manifesto, will map out best practices for administering Jira while still honoring agile principles. Crossing the chasm: From agile to business agility

‘Business Agility’ is all the rage these days, proclaimed by its proponents as the next big thing in Agile. It’s become a buzzword as powerful as ‘software development agility’ was almost 20 years ago.

It’s not surprising since implementing Agile successfully requires a change at almost every level of an organization.

The irony is that many of the same mistakes made by software development orgs in the name of agility are being repeated by their present-day counterparts.

Like software development agility, business agility should start with a fundamental question: is it the right goal to aim for given our organizations current operating model? The chasm between software and business must be bridged if an organization is to have any hope of deploying business agility.

This talk explores how OpenX is trying to cross the chasm.

What if you threw all that out the window? What if instead, you assemble a team without subject matter expertise in the focus area, loosely define the problem, and give them a couple days to “come up with something smart”?

We did just that at Atlassian, and the results were staggering: We resolved a pipelines problem that stagnated for months in two days, launched a global AWS hosting strategy after a 24-hour hackathon, and overhauled how third-parties like Atlassian Marketplace vendors and in-house developers build on top of our products in a matter of weeks.

In this session, attendees will see examples of projects that broke all the rules and succeeded, and leave with practical advice to implement in their own organizations as they scale.
