Jira Consolidation and Migration - the Benefits of Hindsight
Sep 05 14:50 - 15:30 | Room 9

Roy Chapman
Atlassian Administrator, SCM Best Practice Ltd
Jira often starts small and grows organically within a business, a side effect of this can be that even small organizations find themselves with multiple Jira instances, deployed in different ways, leading to complexity for users and IT teams.
Consolidating Jira instances is not as straightforward as simply copying data, any migration needs a plan, and to be well managed, staged and tested. Based on my experience of consolidating 26 JIRA instances of varying versions, configurations, and use-cases, into a single Data Center instance, I will discuss the process adopted, the lessons learned and propose a fresh approach for those planning to migrate, including the tools used, methods adopted, and how to avoid creating problems later on.
20/20 hindsight is always the clearest.

Sep 05 10:30 - 11:10 | Room 4

Prafulla Arvind
Engineering Manager, VMWare

Kum Tham
Director Engineering , VMWare
How to scale efficiently becomes your biggest concern when you see rapid user adoption of any application. At VMware, adoption of Atlassian tools grew from 100's to 1000's of users per month within a year. This growth brought added complexity to on-boarding new teams, upgrading, maintaining a performant environment and ensuring stability while providing HA and DR. We had to be cautious when introducing new add-ons and integrations to support Service Management and Agile transformations. To satisfy complex requirements, we embraced several deployment models, moving from server to DC while introducing MySQL clustering and a hybrid DR solution on VMC in AWS. In this talk, we'll share our journey through these challenges, how our experience informed new onboarding techniques and policies, and the valuable guidance we received from our TAMs.

Tuning Jira Horsepower for Scaling and Performance
Sep 04 14:50 - 15:30 | Room 8

Michael Brosnan
Lead Software Development Engineer, MetLife
Jira is a powerful, flexible system that can support thousands of users, hundreds of projects, and millions of issues. But as the numbers of teams depending on Jira grows, managing performance becomes a larger priority — degraded performance and downtime isn't an option. To successfully tune Jira for performance, you need to understand how to plan for and respond to the system when it's under pressure, and how to deal with the unexpected. Join this session to learn how to benchmark and test performance, calibrate usage patterns against other example instances, and discover the secrets to "Jira Horsepower": the combination of available compute resources, I/O performance, and scale and usage models. See why Jira responds to user requests the way it does, and what can help or hinder that performance metric.

Overcoming Modern CI/CD Challenges with Bitbucket Pipelines
Sep 05 10:30 - 11:10 | Room 8

Aneita Yang
Product Management Associate, Atlassian
Getting started with CI/CD hasn't always been easy. While the practice has long existed to help teams build software more efficiently and effectively, traditional CI tools have required a lot of effort to configure and maintain. And as the adoption of continuous integration and delivery increases, another challenge has also arisen - staying up-to-date with releases across a company has become more difficult as teams deploy more frequently.
With Bitbucket Pipelines and Deployments, we've built a fully-hosted continuous integration and deployment tracking tool that lives right inside Bitbucket Cloud to address these challenges whilst still giving your team the full benefits of CI/CD. Whether your team is just getting started or are more advanced in the process, join Aneita Yang, Bitbucket Product Manager, as she shows you how your team can use Bitbucket Cloud to practice CI/CD, and overcome these new challenges, to work better and faster together.

Triage Lessons Learned After 10 Years With Jira
Sep 04 11:50 - 12:05 | Room 10

Sherylyn Doctor
Engineer, Quicklogic Corporation
Over the years, at every company I've worked with, engineers and managers have had to deal with information overload from our issue tracking systems. We've had numerous debates on whether a fix is safe, whether it is the right thing to do in the short and long term, and whether or not to include it in a release. Numerous times, managers have shot down engineers' concerns and vice versa. A few times, that overload has been the root cause of mission or project failure.
This talk covers lessons learned about using Jira for triage: how to find the most relevant comments, what constitutes "relevant", and how to stay on top of the important changes without missing a beat.

Why We’re Bad at Estimation, and What We Can Do About It
Sep 05 14:00 - 14:40 | Room 11

Steve Haffenden
Senior Developer, Confluence Server, Atlassian
We've all been there. You're building a new feature and have planned meticulously - success criteria, milestones, and estimations. You've considered your dependencies, risks and who all of your stakeholders are. Yet somehow the project is never completed on time.
This problem is known as the planning fallacy and isn't unique to the software industry. Globally, organizations across every sector struggle to complete projects on time, often with catastrophic results.
This talk will use examples from a range of industries to understand why we struggle so much with estimation and planning, what frameworks are available for overcoming it, and how we can apply these practically when estimating software while remaining agile.

Jira Service Desk for Non-Technical Teams
Sep 04 11:50 - 12:05 | Room 7

Vincent Wong
Product Manager - Jira Service Desk, Atlassian
Service desks have traditionally been tools for IT and support teams, however, there are many other teams in your organization that act like service teams but may not necessarily see themselves as one. Those teams are being bombarded with asks and requests for help from other employees and are always getting interrupted from their work. These service requests could be for your legal team to review contracts, marketing to send emails or even facilities to reserve desks for visitors. What if we took a page out of the IT and support handbook and applied similar concepts to non-technical teams!
In this talk, I will show you how Atlassian has started using service desks for many non-technical teams in our organization. I will also provide some tips and tricks on the best way to spot these teams, set up a service desk for them in a way that makes sense for how they work, and spread the tool across your organization for maximum productivity.

In agile, business people and developers work together in harmony on a daily basis. Right? In reality, this relationship is very tricky. As a response to this, Atlassian adopted the "Triad" model to try and connect business, design, and engineering. But last year, the Jira team found that our model wasn't functioning as designed, and it was impacting our customers. With the help of the Atlassian Team Playbook, the team was able to uncover the issues and host a healthy debate on how to fix it. The results taught us that maybe even models should be agile, too.
In this talk you'll learn:
- How to improve communication and collaboration without undergoing a major agile transformation
- Tips for breaking down barriers between your product team and marketing

Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail: Goal Setting With OKRs

It's challenging to ensure your teams' work aligns with broader company-level vision and goals – and disconnects can be costly. Both customer value and progress towards the company's BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) can suffer.
World-class companies such as Google, Intel, and Amazon rely on OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) to communicate strategy to and among teams. OKRs are opportunities to learn and act; teams that are able to fail, learn, and act faster will ultimately be more successful in an ever-changing environment.
But how do you actually implement OKRs? And what's the right approach to generate alignment? Uniting Technical and Non-Technical Teams With the Atlassian Team Playbook
Sep 04 14:50 - 15:30 | Room 7
Shannon Winter
Atlassian
It's common for technical and non-technical teams to remain siloed, even when they sit right next to each other. And while it's often easier to stay in separate lanes, a lack of communication and transparency is harmful to how teams get work done internally (distrust, duplicate work, etc.) and what customers experience externally (inconsistency, confusion, etc.).
Come learn how teams across Atlassian use the Team Playbook – by both creating and dogfooding plays – to open up dialogue, build trust, increase efficiency, and improve crucial practices like project management and incident response. You'll leave feeling empowered to select and facilitate plays that will create a more open and collaborative culture among teams at your own company.
