Beyond Jira: The Wall of Work

Wednesday, April 10, 11:00 AM - Wednesday, April 10, 11:40 AM | Oceanside D

Over the past few years, Optimizely grew from a single-product company built by a handful of engineers and designers to a multi-product company built by many teams. But, its development processes didn't adapt fast enough to keep up with growth. Engineers had too many dependencies in flight, designers were added too late in the process to be effective, and the highest value work wasn't properly prioritized.

Hear how one startup moved from chaos to scrum and beyond by implementing Enterprise Service Planning (ESP) and the seven kanban cadences, and by creating a fifty foot wall of work. The result: increasing overall velocity while decreasing time to customer value across multiple products.

Can DevOps and ITSM be BFFs?

Thursday, April 11, 11:20 AM - Thursday, April 11, 12:00 PM | Oceanside D

Doesn’t it feel like ITSM and DevOps represent completely different approaches? ITSM has the baggage of slow and tedious ITIL-inspired processes. On the other hand, DevOps’ obsession with automation makes some organizations skeptical about whether it would really work for them. So which one is better?

The new ITIL 4 framework attempts to bridge this gap with new principles. And (spoiler alert!) DevOps is more about culture than automation. Before you reach for Atlassian or 3rd party products, you owe it to yourself to get grounded in the cultural aspects of managing enterprise IT. Join this session with two of Atlassian’s IT and DevOps experts to learn 5 practical recommendations for high-velocity IT teams, inspired by a blend of DevOps and ITIL 4 practices.

Building a Culture of Trust and Transparency Through Confluence

Wednesday, April 10, 02:50 PM - Wednesday, April 10, 03:30 PM | Oceanside D

The natural inclination for most global public companies is to hide things, yet transparency has always been core to HubSpot’s culture. But, a culture of transparency doesn't just happen -- you have to build it. One of the primary ways HubSpot has built a transparent culture is through "the wiki," powered by Confluence. At HubSpot, all 2,500 employees are encouraged to think like stakeholders or CEOs. Everyone has access to the wiki where everything is shared - from financials to strategy - with everyone in the organization. Why? Because sharing builds transparency, trust and alignment. The "wiki" removes the incentive for teams and leaders to solve for themselves over the organization, and instead encourages conversations, collaboration, and innovation for a common mission.
In this talk, Katie Burke, HubSpot's Chief People Officer, will share the story of how Confluence became a pillar of HubSpot's award-winning culture, as well as highlight specific use cases you'll be able to implement at your own company.

Can DevOps and ITSM be BFFs?

Thursday, April 11, 11:20 AM - Thursday, April 11, 12:00 PM | Oceanside D

How to Develop, Track, and Release Like a Boss Using Atlassian Tools

Thursday, April 11, 04:00 PM - Thursday, April 11, 04:40 PM | Mandalay Bay CD

In 2015, Hitachi Vantara, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd., was using a traditional development approach for their internal IT front office application and releasing only every 2-3 months. But that just wouldn't cut it. The application, built on the Salesforce platform, was simply too important. When they moved to agile, the team realized they'd need to level up on communication, collaboration, and workflow automation. Intimidated, yet determined, Hitachi Vantara turned to Atlassian's cloud-based tools: Jira and Confluence for planning, tracking, and documentation; Bitbucket for collaborating on source code; Bitbucket Pipelines for continuous delivery; and the whole host of native integrations to tie it all together. This is the story of how they did it, and the results they achieved.

Psychological Safety and the Social Side of Team Performance

Wednesday, April 10, 02:50 PM - Wednesday, April 10, 03:30 PM | Oceanside B

How is psychological safety created in teams and why is it so important when doing the work of strategy? Join Mike Vierow from McKinsey & Company and Tom Harkin from Tomorrow Architects to explore the team condition defined as psychological safety; its links to leadership, team performance, innovation, and distinctive strategic moves.
In the context of overwhelming disruption, it's not easy for leaders to step into the dilemma of building team cultures that are both psychologically safe and demanding (of innovation and performance). Too often, leaders overlook how this condition shows up and the role it plays in critical conversations on performance, strategy, risk or ethics.
At this talk we will explore psychological safety and examine the differences between ‘team rooms’ that exist with and without psychological safety. Tom will lead an active experience where you will learn first hand how to create the foundation of this condition. Mike will explore the implications for individual leaders and how the capacity to ‘lead self’ is the largest determiner of psychological safety.
