Atlassian named a Gartner Enterprise Agile Planning Tools Magic Quadrant leader

As more and more companies adopt agile practices, their tools need to keep up with the demands of startups to enterprises and everything in between. And no matter what flavor of agile your teams practice, we want our tools to help you iterate and release great software. That is why we are happy to announce that Atlassian is once again a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Agile Planning. We are committed to agile teams and committed to helping customers adopt agile best practices.

Read on to see how we did in the report, download it, and learn why enterprise agile planning is so important for software development.

Enterprise agile planning

Tools like Jira Software, and its add-on Portfolio for Jira, have always played in the space of agile tooling. But the recent Gartner Magic Quadrant report shifted from the idea of ALM tools to focus on agile and enterprises. Gartner defines this new wave of agile planning tools as those tools that, “enable organizations to make use of agile practices at scale to achieve enterprise-class agile development (EAD)” and acknowledges that there has been a recent “evolution from project-centric agile tools” toward EADs.

This is particularly important for those software development teams, departments, and companies that want to keep the day-to-day of software development and releasing, like coordination and collaboration, simple. No one wants bloated tools that get in the way of teams writing code and releasing software quickly.

But therein lies the rub: how can teams be autonomous and work towards a business strategy. That is what EADs are for. They need to support “monthly, weekly and even daily deliverables based on business outcomes.” For Jira Software, these requirements are reflected in chunks of work like initiatives, epics, stories, and sub-tasks. This workflow of creating requirements and breaking work into smaller chunks of work that can be released to customers early and often gives developers freedom, but it also is tracked in Jira Software to ensure that whatever work is being done aligns with business strategy – this is the future of agile development: linking work to strategy.

Enterprise agile planning as the foundation of DevOps toolchains

We believe the most interesting thing to come out of this report is Gartner’s attention to the symbiotic relationship between agile development and DevOps. As agile practices mature — think standups, unit testing, retrospectives, etc.. — continuous integration becomes the next step in agile maturity. Gartner goes as far as to say that, “by 2020, enterprise agile planning tools will become the foundation of DevOps toolchains, enabling coherent and comprehensive planning and deployment of product solutions.”

This is huge for anyone practicing agile development. If you want to get the benefits of agile development like delivering to your customers early and often, now you need to make sure you are doing this correctly by bringing development and operations together.

We have seen this at Atlassian internally and amongst our customers; companies from traditional retailers to software giants are now using DevOps to drive improvements in their cloud and server infrastructure, inform product management and development cycles, and enhance security and application reliability. And to do this right, you need your tools to support both practices and the cultural movements that they represent.
