Project categories
Project categories are a convenient way of grouping related projects — great for program management.

Project versions
Use JIRA's versions to represent your project's milestones.
Usage examples:
- a specific release number of your product (e.g. 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.2)
- a business period (e.g. Q1 2006, Q2 2006 or Week 1, Week 2)
- a project phase (e.g. Design, Build, Test, Pilot, Production)
By assigning issues to versions, you can track the progress made towards any milestone. A number of convenient JIRA reports leverage versions, such as:
- Road Map: all issues assigned to upcoming versions
- Change Log: all issues assigned to completed versions
- Version Workload Report: resource utilisation for a specified version
Project components
Components are logical sub-sections of a project.
Usage example: If you're building a plane, components might include 'Fuselage', 'Landing Gear', 'Wings'.
By allocating issues to specific components, project managers can generate component-centric reports and searches, providing greater insight into their project.
Issues can be automatically delegated to the appropriate resource by configuring a lead (an assignee) for any component.
Voting on issues
In some projects, it may be appropriate to seek stakeholder input in order to gauge the popularity of particular issues. This may, for instance, be useful when determining which issues should be assigned to upcoming versions.
JIRA allows you to choose which issues can be voted on and by whom. The results are displayed in the 'Popular Issues' report.
Linking issues together
You can link issues together and signify the type of relationship between them (such as 'Relates To', 'Blocked By', 'Derived From', 'Duplicates').
Links are bi-directional, which is useful in preventing duplication of effort, or ensuring that all information is available. You can even link to issues in other projects.
