Mike's AtlasCamp Keynote Video

Thanks again to everyone who joined us in Santa Rosa for AtlasCamp (our three day developer-only conference) this past September. The event was a huge success and I absolutely can't wait for next year.

The first (useful) Atlassian Dashboard

image

As you might know if you've watched Mike's Keynote from this fall's AtlasCamp, one of the things we're working on right now is a new, modern dashboard that can be used across our products. The San Francisco development team has been working on this effort for a while now, but we've been doing it in a slightly unconventional way.

Because the dashboard component is ultimately destined for all our products, we're not developing it in any of them. Instead we're using a new tool called the Reference Implementation. This is an application with no features and no functionality. Additionally, it is meant to represent the lowest common denominator of all our applications — a way of codifying the shared framework in all Atlassian products.

Crowd Caching in 1.6

Why the @#$% is Crowd so slow?

Let's back up a bit. So you have this awesome application that you just wrote; the app does everything it should, and does it relatively well. Now you want it to join the party and get some SSO-goodness with centralised user management with other cool apps. Enter Crowd.

2009 Email Brevity Challenge - Who's game?

email image

In time for the new year, Hutch Carpenter and Jennifer Leggio introduced the 2009 Email Brevity Challenge. The rules are simple...limit every work-related email to 140 characters as if it were a tweet.

I analyzed my last 20 emails to see how close I am to achieving micro-emailer status. The bad news is that my average is well above the 140-character limit. The good news is that I have a clear path for getting there.

This is the first of a handful of tutorials that will show you how it's done. We will look at the Confluence tabs in this tutorial and how we can change their look & feel with a few lines of CSS.

FedEx X - Attack of the Gadgets

A short time ago, in a galaxy not too far away, a group of talented, but brash Developers were shockingly defeated by an enemy alliance forged from planets Tech Writing and Marketing. This epic battle came to be known throughout the universe as "FedEx IX". Soon afterwards, in a ruthless piece of propaganda, the Development empire's deputy overlord promised that the next FedEx would in turn be known as "The Developers Strike Back".

What Wikis can Learn from Kapla Blocks

block image

Last Christmas my son got a set of Kapla blocks which have since become his favorite toy. For the uninitiated, Kapla blocks are small, flat blocks of wood around 4" x 1" x .25." wide. They are the simplest toy you can think of, even simpler than LEGOS.

While playing with Kapla blocks one Saturday morning it occurred to me...wikis are the Kapla blocks of software. They're so basic that they can be morphed into anything...an intranet site, a team page, a customer community.
