As part of the team in Gdansk, Poland, run by our friends at Spartez, you'll be part of one of the most exciting, challenging and satisfying agile software development projects together with people from Sydney and San Francisco.

Spartez has been working with Atlassian for 5 years on key products including JIRA and Bamboo and employs 20 awesomely talented software engineers. We have created a bullshit-free working environment where great ideas and great execution is what matters most. This is a real thriving partnership where both sides collaborate on ongoing projects and product development.

Now we are ready to take our partnership to the next level and cooperate on another two products: FishEye and Crucible.

We're looking for a Principal Developer to provide technical leadership to a team of kick-ass developers working on FishEye and Crucible. As the Principal Developer on the team you will have the technical seniority and will lead the charge to attack the most challenging problems. You will be responsible for analysing these problems, designing elegant solutions, and pushing your solutions through to implementation. You will be working with performance engineers and quality analysts who give your creations a good beating before they are released to thousands of customers worldwide, all while training other developers on your team to grow their expertise.

What you'll do

  • Come up with elegant solutions to very challeging technical problems
  • Point out issues with the existing architecture and code, and clean it up
  • Liaise with the technical leads and developers to promote great software design and quality
  • Provide technical leadership and training to other developers on the team
  • Drive innovation by coming up with new and surprising ideas for our products and processes
  • Develop awesome new features front to back as part of a team
  • Lead by example

Key Skills

  • Excellent understanding and working knowledge of Java
  • Deep architectural understanding of web applications
  • Good knowledge in some back end technologies like Spring, Hibernate, Lucene, SQL or others
  • Superior creative and innovative problem-solving skills
  • Initiative and the ability to work independently and in a team

Preferred skills

  • Knowledge of as many Version Control Systems as possible. E.g. Subversion, Git, Perforce and Mercurial
  • Knowledge of Open Source libraries, tools and frameworks, e.g. for logging, wiring, testing, building. The more the merrier!
  • Excitement for the latest trends in application design
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies like XP and Scrum
  • Interest to learn more about new languages and frameworks

  • Wide experience of successful and failed projects
  • Ability to slice and dice problems so they can be worked on by several people
  • Desire and ability to mentor junior developers
  • Relaxed yet enthusiastic attitude
