Some of the largest organizations in the world standardize on Confluence to enable collaboration and content sharing across their businesses. While Atlassian strives to ensure an open way of working for all of our customers, we also know that some information needs to have a specific audience.

This is why Confluence provides granular permissions controls to ensure the right people can see the right content. In the coming months, we’ll be making these controls even better so you can be confident in your content privacy settings and compliance.

Coming later this year: auditing, troubleshooting and bulk editing

Today, we’re sharing three new permissions features that will make Confluence Data Center even more powerful and help reduce administrative overhead.

Auditing: We’re adding the ability for you to audit your Confluence instance’s permissions, see who can access certain spaces, and search permissions by group or space. You’ll also be able to export these permissions as a CSV file for record keeping and compliance reporting purposes.

Many of you have told us that you’ve been going through Confluence page-by-page or space-by-space and noting down permissions to manually create a permissions audit log. We’re confident this new feature will save you time and effort, so you can focus on what matters to your team.

Troubleshooting: In the admin console, we’re also providing the ability to quickly troubleshoot permission settings. Simply search for a user and the space they need access to, and you’ll be able to see a list of their permissions (like ‘add blog’ or ‘delete attachments’) and change them if needed.

How many times have you been the recipient of an email, ticket, or chat where a Confluence user at your company has asked you why they can’t view a certain link or page? We know it’s time-consuming for admins like you to dig through individual pages, page trees or spaces to understand a user’s access. With troubleshooting, you’ll be able to clearly understand your users’ permission settings all in one place.

Bulk editing: Auditing and troubleshooting are great for taking a snapshot of your Confluence instance’s permissions, but what about making changes to these permissions? Soon, you’ll be able to make bulk changes to space permission settings for users and groups from the admin console, too. This should reduce the amount of time you spend manually updating permissions.

We hope that auditing, troubleshooting, and bulk editing will help enterprise admins like you clearly see and understand who has access to spaces and pages, and why.

These features are made possible through Atlassian’s acquisition of the Ultimate Permissions Manager app produced by META-INF. Ultimate Permissions Manager has now been removed from the Atlassian Marketplace and we will be integrating its capabilities into Confluence Data Center. The META-INF team would like to thank existing customers for their support – you can expect to see many of these improvements as the Confluence team works to integrate Ultimate Permissions Manager in the coming months.

For current Ultimate Permissions Manager customers, in accordance with our End of Life policy, the app will have support for two years, with an end of life date of May 3, 2021. While the app is supported, you can raise issues via support.atlassian.com.

Additional permissions improvements

We’re working on permissions improvements for Confluence Server customers, too. For example, we’ll be making updates to the ‘Share’ dialog by surfacing access issues before you share a page with your teammates. This will help ensure that the people you’re sharing with have the correct permissions and help you resolve any issues prior to sharing… which means fewer ‘Request access’ emails for everybody!
