Title: Senior Systems Engineer

Job description:

Ownership of critical production systems. This includes customer facing and mission critical internal applications. Monitoring, maintenance and optimisation of such systems and assisting development teams in investigating performance and stability issues.

Planning and management of projects involving production systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Scheduling and communicating maintenance windows of critical systems
  • Setting up monitoring and optimisation of production systems
  • Capacity planning and estimation for production systems, working closely with developers and performance engineers
  • Planning and execution of projects around production systems. This includes management of the hosting provider team (Contegix) efforts
  • Ensuring security of critical systems.
  • Assisting developers in investigating performance and stability issues.

Required skills:

  • Experience with provisioning and maintenance of Java web applications and their triage and optimisation.
  • Understanding of Java specific performance issues and their resolution. E.g. garbage collection issues.
  • Scripting experience in one or more: BASH, Perl, Python, Ruby.
  • Experience with production database servers and their monitoring and optimisation (primarily PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with administration of Linux production servers.
  • Experience with monitoring and metrics analysis of production servers using common monitoring tools. E.g. Nagios, Cacti, Hyperic or others
  • A passion for making systems run smoothly, always looking for ways to improve the status-quo.
  • Management of medium-size projects as a technical lead.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with RedHat Enterprise Linux.
  • Experience with Dell server hardware
  • Experience with storage technologies. E.g. NAS, SAN etc.
  • Knowledge of WAN networking technologies. E.g. routing protocols, MPLS, VPNs.
  • Some experience with team leading or project management and dealing with hosted environments.
